Kemira Polyferric Sulfate (PFS) is supplied as a reddish brown solution that is manufactured from a high purity, mined magnetic iron ore, virgin sulfuric acid, water, and liquid oxygen. Using a patented process (U.S. Patent No. 4,707,349), this solution is oxidized until essentially all ferrous iron is converted into ferric iron. The fundamental form of PFS is a polymerized iron sulfate complex that is acid deficient and associated with hydroxyl ions. Because of the purity of the raw materials, stable iron concentrations can be obtained up to 14.5%. The resulting solution complies with the AWWA standard for ferric sulfate (B406) and is NSF/ANSI Standard 60 certified for use in potable water and municipal and industrial wastewater. Some of the advantages of PFS over ferric sulfate include the ability to work in low alkalinity waters; lower density; greater concentration; less pH depression; a faster reaction; faster settling rates; and better COD/BOD removal.
